The Best Time to Reflect, Refresh and Reset!

Can you believe that we are more than half way through 2022?! Whatever feelings this ignites in you, you can be intentional about the rest of 2022.

Personally, I use the month of July to reflect, refresh and reset. July is my pause month – it’s when I stop to refuel in order to finish the year strong. Here is how you can do the same.

Reflect

Reflect on the year to date. What have been the highlights and lowlights? What lessons have you learnt? What surprised you? What has gone according to your plans? I prepare my environment to aid with my reflection. Sometimes, I go away. Other times, I get a journal and write down my thoughts. I find that reflection brings me back to what really matters.

Reflection is not about judgement, it’s about awareness and reviewing the journey travelled so far. I love looking back at my calendar to see if the way I have spent my time aligns with my values and goals.

Refresh

Refresh yourself. This is both about mind and body. Step back and ask yourself ‘how can I refuel?’. One thing I do this month that helps a lot during my process of refreshing is having my phone on focus mode for most of the time, to minimise distractions.

Spend time doing the things you love and that bring you joy! Spend more time in nature, away from technology. Research shows there are many benefits to spending time in nature, including improving our wellbeing.

Reset

Reset to launch into the rest of the year. I take what I discovered in my reflection and either refine my goals, set new ones or ditch the unrealistic or unrewarding goals. At this point, your passion and energy levels should be high. Maximise on this and define what the rest of the year will be like. Ask yourself this question. ‘If today was 31 December and I said to myself I had the best year. What would have happened?’ Whatever your answer, that is the priority that you should focus on.

Common Goal Setting Pitfalls

  1. Your goals not aligned with what you want (lack of resonance).
  2. There is no structure to your goals (only result oriented goals).
  3. You have too many goals (overwhelming).

  6. Giving up (I have tried this before and it didn’t work).
